For his latest film, one of today’s most expressive filmmakers moved from Texas to Louisiana where his “photographic” eye focuses on folk living on the fringes of society. Here he confirms his remarkable talent for observation and his ability to present a respectful, nonjudgmental glimpse into an internal world of wounded souls. The picture was presented in this year’s Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes IFF.
Synopsis
For his latest movie, one of today’s most expressive filmmakers moved from Texas to Louisiana, where the fringes of society include war veterans in addition to the standard alcoholics, druggies, and morally dodgy. Minervini’s fourth feature confirms his remarkable talent for observation and his ability, based on respect, to give viewers a glimpse into an internal world of “wounded souls” that is devoid of contempt or judgment. In long, slow sequences he gets under his protagonists’ (and viewers’) skin, thereby attaining an intense physical experience from the proximity and contact he’s established with the characters. His precise “photographic” eye captures the flipside of the American dream: mundane reality in a region with 60% unemployment. This powerful picture was presented in this year’s Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes IFF.

About the director
Roberto Minervini (b. 1970, Fermo, Italy) established himself in the United States as a photographer, filmmaker, music producer, and educator. He earned a master’s degree in media studies from The New School in New York City. Currently he is a doctoral candidate in film history at Spain’s Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Considering its themes and esthetic, Stop the Pounding Heart (screened at the 2013 KVIFF immediately after its premiere at Cannes) is an apposite finish to the Texas trilogy that the Italian filmmaker began with the road movie The Passage (2011) and the solitude study Low Tide (2012). Prior to the trilogy, Minervini made several shorts and cooperated with musicians from the electronica scene, among others the duo Funkstörung. The Other Side is his latest feature.
