Emília Vášáryová’s bravura performance offers a glimpse into an aging woman’s oppressive world where alcohol is quickening the process of decline. As an actress she’s been written off, and her son blames her for the breakup of his family and for passing on her demons. Under the circumstances it hardly seems likely that the protagonist would give up her most trusted means of comfort...
Synopsis
It’s not exactly an enviable interplay of circumstances that has beset the unfortunate heroine. Once surrounded by men, the former beauty went from role to role on stage and screen; now she’s over 60, her husband has swapped her for a younger woman, and her acting career is drowning in alcohol, which has also seriously damaged relationships with her only son and her sister. She’s already been in rehab three times but how can she resist that “glue for her soul” when she feels worthless and abandoned by everyone? The story avoids artificially dramatizing her situation, instead it simply reports the details of the everyday in which moments of hope quickly fade and the conditions of loss deepen. She acts as though powerless, pangs of conscience and her stricken confidence blocking her at every turn. Can she find a way back to her son in order to help him? Lead Emília Vášáryová shows off her seasoned acting chops, her subdued facial expressions and eloquent eyes quite up to the task of communicating the heroine’s every fear, everything she can’t manage to say.

About the director
Marko Škop (b. 1974, Prešov, Czechoslovakia), director, screenwriter, and producer, graduated in journalism from Comenius University (1986) and in documentary filmmaking from the Academy of Performing Arts (2001), both in Bratislava. Since 1998 he has shot six documentaries, including two feature-length docs (Other Worlds / Iné svety, 2006; Osadné, 2009) that took awards at Karlovy Vary and several other festivals. Inventively mixing irony, humor, poetry, elements of the absurd, and existential contemplation, the films take up the conflict between the region’s vanishing culture and the multiple pressures of the contemporary world. He began his gradual shift toward drama with the Croatian version of the world-renowned series “In Treatment” for Croatian television (2013), confirming it with his feature debut Eva Nová (2015).
