1929 – A Ukrainian town. Avram Švarc decided that his son David will be a famous violinist. 1939 – Moscow. David soaks up the applause at a concert but refuses to acknowledge his father’s presence. 1944 – hospital train. Avram appears to him in a fever and tells him that a father’s greatest joy is always his son’s success.
Synopsis
1929 – a Ukrainian town with a populous Jewish community. The poor widower Avram Švarc has decided that his son David will be a famous violinist. David begins to hate his father. 1939 – Moscow. David soaks up the applause at his graduation concert; a career awaits him. Unexpectedly, and to David displeasure, Avram shows up. The son is embarrassed of his simpleton father, and is mortified that he thereby reveals his own class background and his Jewish roots. A search for “enemies of the people” is being instituted and the members of their families. He asks Avram to leave immediately, but accepts the money offered to him all the same. 1944 – hospital train. David is among the wounded; his arm may have to br amputed. Avram appears to him in his delirium...
About the director
Vladimir Mashkov (b. 1963, Novokuznetsk, USSR) was born into a theatrical family. After graduating in 1990 from the school of the Moscow Art Theatre (MCHAT), he cooperated with Oleg Tabakov’s studio theatre. Today, in addition to acting, he directs for the stage. He debuted as a movie director with the lyrical comedy Sympathy Seeker (Sirota kazanskaya, 1997), screened, like many other films in which he appeared, at Karlovy Vary. He has won several acting awards. Filmography as actor (Russian productions): Me Ivan, You Abraham (Moi Ivan, toi Abraham, 1993), Limita (1994), American Daughter (Amerikanskaya doch, 1995), The Thief (Vor, 1997), Two Moons, Three Suns (Dve luny, tri solntsa, 1998), Mama (1999), The Captain’s Daughter (Russkij bunt, 2000). His filmography also includes successful American and coproduction films: Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000), 15 Minutes (2001), The Quickie (2001), American Rhapsody (2001), Behind Enemy Lines (2001) and Tycoon (Oligarkh, 2002). He also played Rogozhin in the popular TV series “The Idiot” (2003).
