1962, Poland. Before Anna, a lovely 18-year-old, takes orders to become a nun, she should first pay a visit to her only living relative – her mother’s sister Wanda. Together these two temperamentally different women set out on a journey into their family’s past that will lead them toward their destiny. This black-and-white, visually powerful movie centers particularly on its characters’ inner turmoil.

Synopsis

1962, Poland. Anna is a lovely, 18-year-old woman who is preparing to take orders in the same convent where she has lived since becoming an orphan. The mother superior informs Anna that prior to taking her vows, she should meet with her only living relative – her mother’s sister Wanda. These two temperamentally different women set out on a journey together into their family’s past that will lead them toward their destiny. The black-and-white, visually striking picture explores the uncertainty of these complex characters with both conviction and profound humanity, their spirits reflected with great power in the faces of the two actors. One of Britain’s most original directors, Polish born Pawel Pawlikowski had this to say about the film: "I wanted to make a film about history, which would not feel like a historical film; a film which is moral, but has no lessons to offer; I wanted to tell a story in which ‘everyone has their reasonsʼ – a story closer to poetry than plot.”

About the director

Pawel Pawlikowski (b. 1957, Warsaw) has lived in the UK since 1971. He read literature and philosophy at Oxford and began making movies in the 1980s. At first he shot documentaries for the BBC, mixing fact and fiction in a highly original and poetic way; titles include From Moscow to Pietushki (1991), Dostoevsky’s Travels (1991), Serbian Epics (1992), and Tripping with Zhirinovsky (1995). In 1999 he shot the low-budget, made-for-TV movie Twockers. Then came the features Last Resort (2000 – KVIFF 2001) and My Summer of Love (2004). The pair garnered many festival awards, as well as a BAFTA apiece. In 2011 he shot the mystery thriller The Woman in the Fifth (La femme du Vème). Ida is his latest work.
