San Jose, Costa Rica, the present. Pedro (30) and Luciana (29) meet at a party. Although there’s no fatal attraction, there’s a hint that something is happening between them. What follows is an impulsive decision to travel together to the base of the Rincon de la vieja volcano in the northwest of the country. Forget about past traumas, this unassuming romance focuses on the importance and singularity of the here and now.
Synopsis
Not even sure of each other’s names, Luciana and Pedro take off from a party where they've managed to exchange a few words and kisses. The idea of a night without commitments propels them through the streets, but the way home is long and the only way to fight off their overwhelming fatigue is to make fun of partnership stereotypes. The mischievous mood doesn't leave them even the next day when Luciana decides to accompany Pedro on a trip to Rincón de la Vieja volcano. This low-key movie composed of subtle black-and-white shots asks a number of seemingly simple questions about the nature of human relationships, yet its immediacy sets it apart from conventional romantic fare. The escape into a forested region hardly touched by civilization doesn't merely present an opportunity for mutual understanding; the quiet environment of unspoiled nature encourages more serious discussion as well. A modest story from a promising director that stands out for the ease with which it is told and for the graceful manner in which unforced authenticity mixes with gentle impressionism.
