Today at 10.30pm, two-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe will personally introduce the screening of the film Pasolini by director Abel Ferrara in the Hotel Thermal Grand Hall. The movie follows the final days of well-known controversial artist Pier Paolo Pasolini, whose murder was never fully explained.
At 2pm, the world premiere of the restored digitised version of the famous work of Czechoslovak New Wave, Intimate Lighting, will take place in the Grand Hall of Hotel Thermal accompanied by its director Ivan Passer. At 5pm in the same place, the last film by the world-format Czech director Jan Němec, who died just this year, The Wolf from Royal Vineyard Street, will be presented to the public. This gloomy, slightly autobiographical comedy with Jiří Mádl in the main role kicks off the year's Main Competition.
Also entering the ring for the Crystal Globe today is the unconventional psychological romance Original Bliss. This original adaptation of the book by renowned Scottish author A. L. Kennedy will be presented in the Grand Hall at 8pm by a delegation including the prominent German actor Ulrich Tukur. The second competition section East of the West will open today with the Hungarian black comedy Kills on Wheels about a gang of handicapped assassins.
In addition to film, the second day of the festival will also include the traditional ČEZ Energy Fest at Poštovní dvůr. Gates open at 3.30pm and the event will feature the bands Všichni svatí, Klára Vytisková, The Prostitutes, Portless, Tata Bojs, and MIG 21, culminating at midnight with a concert by Michal Hrůza. Entrance is free for Festival Pass holders.
Starting at 1pm at Czech Television House on Divadelní náměstí you can learn about a film whose topic are the world-famous dancing brothers Jiří and Otto Bubeníček. Along with dancers who will perform a short dance, the debate will feature the movie's director Martin Kubala and Festival President Jiří Bartoška. Then at 3pm, director Galina Miklínová, actor Marek Taclík and others will come to chat about the animated family adventure film Lichožrouti about creatures who steal socks.
At the RWE stand by the Mlýnská kolonáda, there will be an autograph session for the film Tiger Theory with actress Eliška Balzerová and director Radek Bajgar. The programme of accompanying events, which you can read here, also includes exhibitions. At 5pm at the Karlovy Vary Art Gallery there will be an opening of an exhibit of film posters by Jiří Balcar, whose original work combines classic painting and drawing techniques with collage and montage.
