A KVIFF Talk with the Authors of Festival Trailers

July 01, 2019, 16:47

During the viewer discussion at the KVIFF Talk on Monday, moderator Šimon Holý met with the festival trailer directors Martin Krejčí and Ivan Zachariáš. They spoke of the concept, length, and especially anecdotes from the filming of the trailers, the protagonists of which are winners of the KVIFF awards. The directors are also presenting their own projects at the festival. In the case of Martin Krejčí, it's the American-produced drama The True Adventures of Wolfboy and in the case of Ivan Zachariáš the HBO Europe miniseries The Sleepers.

Festival trailers began in 2008. This year saw their sixteenth iteration. On several occasions, the filmmakers never got to shoot, mainly because of the busy schedules of stars such as Robert De Niro, Antonio Banderas, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench or Jean Reno. The ones who did agree to participate often required the filmmakers to be extremely accommodating of their schedules. For instance, when filming Helen Mirren, they had just 20 minutes. "Only thanks to our careful preparation, during which we rehearsed everything with a double, left the lights in place and made lines on the ground Helen Mirren could follow, and also thanks to the fact that Mirren is a real professional, did we manage to finish in 19 minutes," says Krejčí.

Besides their professionalism, the directors also appreciate how friendly stars can be. For instance, John Malkovich drove them around town and then took them to a bar. "We had a bit of a crisis with Jude Law. He was supposed to drive a car and his managers didn't agree with it, because he wasn't insured for driving. But he just said "fuck it" and drove anyway. He was really laid back and enjoyed himself," remembered Ivan Zachariáš.

In the end the directors remembered which shoot was the greatest challenge for them. "For me, it was without a doubt working on this year's trailer with Jiřina Bohdalová. I had to watch 45 hours of the children's show Křemílek a Vochomůrka and I was starting to lose my grip towards the end," laughed Krejčí.
