The Proxima Competition opens with an intimate transition diary and a sexual odyssey

June 29, 2024, 11:00

The third edition of the Proxima Competition has commenced, which aims to showcase works displaying creative vigour and progressive cinematic expression. Twelve films in total will be presented in the competition.

Trans memoria by Swedish artist Victoria Verseau is the first to be presented at the 58th KVIFF, where the author takes on her own experiences to contemplate the topics of the body, memory and identity. In her feature documentary debut, the graduate from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm reflects on her transition and explores what defines her as a woman. She also has to overcome the death of her friend and, together with two other women undergoing transition, she is listening to the ghosts of the past, the laughter of the present, and the whispering of the future. Her intimate documentary diary will be screened in the world premiere at the Municipal Theatre today at 4 pm.

At 7pm, the Municipal Theatre will present to the first audience Tropicana, a slightly mysterious reflection on conservatism, prudery and the false ideal of physical beauty. In making the film, Israeli director Omer Tobi of Moroccan-Tunisian-Romanian origin, was inspired by his childhood years spent in a conservative desert suburb. Following the life of a lonely supermarket cashier, whose monotonous life is shattered by the mysterious death of her superior, the filmmaker explores the way how our environment determines our sexual identity. This minimalist odyssey of longing that chronicles the unbearable bureaucracy on the way to a close encounter with another human being is Tobi’s feature debut.
