The 58th KVIFF’s closing film was shot by a creator who is no newcomer to Karlovy Vary. He showed his successful debut Apples on the festival screen when he was a member of the Crystal Globe Competition jury in 2021. Christos Nikou found the idea for Fingernails on the display of his mobile phone. “The inspiration for this film about love was one research, according to which we touch our mobile phones more than 2,600 times a day,” said Nikou before the screening of the film, which takes place in a scientific institute focused on testing the mutual compatibility of potential partners. The director’s second feature film, co-produced by Cate Blanchett, enchanted the audience with disarming performances from Jesse Buckley and Riz Ahmed.
The filmmaker also reminded that his film appears on the screen in the Czech Republic after it was released on a streaming platform. “It’s a great honour to be here. This film belongs in the cinema,” he rejoiced before the final screening and added one wish: “I hope to see you all here again.”
