  • Miloš Fikejz: Intimate Portraits

In honour of Miloš Fikejz (1959–2019), a colleague of many years’ standing, KVIFF has organised an exhibition of his black-and-white portraits and documentary photographs of Czech and foreign celebrity guests whom Miloš encountered in Karlovy Vary over the years. They were shot away from the red carpet, almost as if the subject were unaware, and their author, a silent and well-informed observer, was adept at capturing both the fine nuances of personality and the transience of the moment. The exhibition will enchant all those who appreciate high-quality photography and those who just want to drop by for a moment to have a look.

Over 200 original color drawings and more than 200 puppets from other bedtime stories, calendars, world exhibits, and commercials will be on display in four exhibition halls. • Michal Gabriel – The Red Carpet

Michal Gabriel (b. 1960), the inimitable member of the art group Tvrdohlaví, head of the Sculpture Studio at the Brno University of Technology, and a sculptor for whom art is first and foremost a story. His main theme as an artist are human and animal figures and their relationships to each other and their environments (his works are often made for public spaces). The surface structures of his pieces play an important role. Gabriel experiments constantly with form in his work – lately he has been constructing his statues using rasters, new technologies that give rise to exceptionally forceful objects made of layers of stainless steel. His most striking work of this type is his proposal for an equestrian statue of Charles IV for the city of Karlovy Vary. These most recent of the artist’s forays will be on display alongside a number of his earlier works at the Karlovy Vary exhibit. Opening on Saturday, June 29, at 5 pm.

June 29 to July 6, 2019, open daily from 10 am to 7 pm, tel.: 353 224 387, www.galeriekvary.cz, FB: Galerie umění KV.

  • Exhibit of Czech film posters, 1931–1948

The exhibit introduces a selection of the most attractive film posters from the years 1931–1948. Visitors can see the unique banner format that took film posters by storm after the emergence of sound films in the early 1930s. Due to their graphic design, these period posters were never fully accepted by authorities in the field and were consigned to the role of vintage kitsch. It is only now that we are beginning to uncover their charm and attractiveness and recognize the genius of the advertisers of the time. The exhibit is topped off with original decorations and period costumes from the Barrandov Film Studios collection.

Open daily 10 am to 6 pm, CZ/EN displays, guided tours, www.kvmuz.cz.

  • František Konopa – A Series of Life

The 22-year-old photographer and photography teacher at the Secondary School of Arts and Design in Karlovy Vary presents a new collection of portrait photographs that collectively tell unique stories. The artist himself calls it a reaction to the current state of Czech portrait photography, which he feels has lost its oomph by valorizing technical perfection and pictures lacking a story, where the models strike a pose and the viewer gets no added value. The collection goes after emotion, everyday real stories, and even distantly real ones. The exhibit will run until July 30, 2019 (open daily from 10 am to 5 pm). Organized by Charlie Gallery. http://www.facebook.com/frantisek.konopa.9
