Hunting Season

Horizons 2018 / Temporada de Caza / Argentina, USA, France, Germany, Qatar 2017

Untamed South American scenery as a reflection of the tattered internal landscape of a father and son, hunter and apprentice, whose confrontational relationship is pushed to an extreme level of instinct during a hunt. Here, hunting stands as an initiation ritual that employs the predator-prey dynamic to teach not only killing but also humility and forgiveness.

Synopsis

Sparking interest at the Venice IFF, Natalia Garagiola’s feature debut focuses on the conflicted relationship between Ernesto, a respected tracker, and his son Nahuel. Although Ernesto hasn’t seen Nahuel in ten years, he is obliged to take the boy in after his first wife dies. The defiant son and the intransigent father represent predators who battle each other for respect and to become the lone alpha male. But only one of them can be master… Taking its cue from the inhospitable conditions of the Patagonian wilderness, this bleak drama pares away all embellishments of family discord while zeroing in on the emotional mindset of participants who are armed with rifles and, more to the point, with stubbornness.
