Synopsis

Christmas Eve, 1985. While the family is eating dinner Juan decides to implement his plan – he and his best friend are going to rob the National Museum of Anthropology. But the theft of Mayan and Mesoamerican artifacts turns out to be far more serious than either young man imagined. Employing gentle humor and film references, Alonso Ruizpalacios’s engrossing movie is an example of the type of intelligent cinematic work that will mature well with age. The melancholy combination of buddy film, family drama, road movie, and heist flick abounds with inventiveness, and it’s no wonder the script, inspired by the biggest burglary in Mexican history, earned Ruizpalacios and Manuel Alcalá a Silver Bear at the Berlinale.
