Synopsis

True, Cameron is dating a boy but she’s in love with a girl in her class. When she’s caught making out with her in the backseat of a car, her guardians take drastic steps – they send their ward to a Christian camp for gay conversion therapy. Set in the 1990s, this adaptation of the Emily Danforth coming-of-age novel, which offers up a variation on the queer comedy But I’m a Cheerleader, took the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at this year’s Sundance. The film pleases for nailing its pop-culture references to the given era, but also for its message: being an outsider is no reason to think of yourself as inferior. Actually, quite the reverse: let your freak flag fly!
