A Little Wisdom

Documentary Films - Competition 2018 / Xiao Zhihui / Canada, Nepal, China 2017

An isolated Buddhist monastery in southern Nepal not only provides refuge for monks, but also for orphans up to the age of sixteen. Far removed from civilisation, the boys learn about strict discipline and order yet, like all children, they hanker after adventure. An observational documentary which captures both the routine of the passing days and the vagaries of boyhood.

A Little Wisdom A Little Wisdom

Synopsis

Five-year-old Hopakuli can’t really remember his life outside the Buddhist monastery. When he was an infant his mother entrusted him and his older brother Chorten to the care of monks living in southern Nepal because, as for many other boys from humble origins, this was the only chance to get an education. In her observational, contemplative documentary Yuqi Kang overturns the romantic notion of what Buddhists are: they’re not merely self-possessed adults, but also mischievous little scamps. Despite the assumption that only strict discipline is taught behind the monastery walls, the gifted, keen-eyed director demonstrates in her debut that these boys, like all children, have bags of energy and hanker after adventure.
