Lucia’s Grace

Horizons 2018 / Troppa Grazia / Italy 2018

Lucia, a surveyor by profession, lives with her teenage daughter in a small town in the Veneto region. One day the Virgin Mary appears to her and instructs her to build a church on a site planned for the construction of a commercial centre. Lucia initially thinks her mind is playing tricks, but in the end, in order to fulfil the Madonna’s wish, she launches a battle with the authorities and investors. And with good reason as it turns out. Starring Alba Rohrwacher, Lucia’s Grace won an award from the Directors’ Fortnight at this year’s Cannes fest.

Synopsis

Unemployed Lucia, a surveyor by profession, lives with her teenage daughter in a small town in the Veneto region. One day the Virgin Mary appears to her and instructs her to build a church on a site planned for the construction of a commercial centre. Lucia thinks her mind is playing tricks, but the Madonna is persistent, continually seeking her out until Lucia does indeed launch a battle with powerful investors and the local authorities in order to fulfil Her wishes. And with very good reason as it turns out. The film by Gianni Zanasi, in Italy known for his unconventional comedies, stars the now internationally acclaimed Alba Rohrwacher, Elio Germano and Valerio Mastandrea. With its satirical undercurrents the film was a huge hit with audiences and critics alike during this year’s Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes.
