Synopsis

Leningrad, the beginning of the 1980s. The grey gloom of political repression is brightened by an emerging edgy rock movement. Mike Naumenko, frontman of the band Zoopark, takes a singer named Viktor under his wing, a boy who’s soon become rock legend Viktor Tsoi. Shot in black-and-white, the nostalgic but unsentimental Summer evokes the social atmosphere of USSR in the early 1980s. Foreign hits from records illegally purchased on the black market as well as the two musicians’ own songs supply the music to an outstanding movie whose editing and post-production were completed without the director, who has spent nearly a year under house arrest.
