Nö

Crystal Globe Competition 2021 / Nö / Germany 2021

Isn’t the trajectory of a shared life determined in advance? Get married, have kids, be like everyone else… According to Dietrich Brüggemann, who competed in Vary six years ago, 30-somethings conceivably have it all, yet they fail in their attempts to achieve their set ideals. Nö delivers a critique of contemporary values, while also highlighting the struggle to find and nurture love.

Synopsis

“Sometimes I think we should break up,” Michael tells Dina, with whom he has spent five happy years. Isn’t the trajectory of a shared life determined in advance? Get married, have kids, be like everyone else… Thirteen episodes map out the protagonists’ coexistence after Dina dispels her boyfriend’s misgivings and takes a firm decision on the future of their relationship. Dietrich Brüggemann once again presents a critique of social values and attitudes, this time focusing on the generation of 30-somethings who appear to have it all, yet fail in their attempts to achieve their set ideals. Despite its characteristic barbed tone, the provocative filmmaker’s new picture is a testimony of love and the responsibility that comes with it, likewise of the endeavour not to lose sight of it.
