Flee

Horizons 2021 / Flee / Denmark, France, Sweden, Norway 2021

While he looks ahead to a shared future with his partner, 36-year-old Amin cannot escape the past he has concealed for the last twenty years. Through animation and via a series of interviews, Flee documents the exceptionally profound testimony of a man who, confronted with his traumatic recollections as an Afghan immigrant, finds out who he really is and discovers the true meaning of home.

Flee Flee

Synopsis

Jonas Poher Rasmussen, an experienced radio documentarian, spent four years recording his friend’s recollections as an Afghan immigrant, however, he realised in the process that the audio medium alone couldn’t possibly capture the full extent of his turbulent history. Animation provided the protagonist – going by the pseudonym Amin Nawabi – with the means to preserve his anonymity yet speak openly about his tough childhood and adolescence. The result is an exceptionally profound testimony of a man who, for twenty years, endeavoured to supplant his oppressive memories in order to become a European. This is a story of self-discovery and of the true meaning of home, which can only be found when you stop fleeing from who you are.
