Otar's Death

East of the West Competition 2021 / Otar's Death / Georgia, Germany, Lithuania 2021

Two families, each facing its own existential difficulties, are brought together by an unfortunate event. For one family, the accident has a fatal impact; for the other, it becomes an opportunity for a better life. The film’s careful exploration of all the participants’ perspectives culminates in a meditation on human morals while not shying away from a tragicomic tone.

Synopsis

Two families, each facing its own existential difficulties, are brought together by an unfortunate event. The victims of the accident offer not to press charges if they are paid. And so Keti, whose sixteen-year-old son Nika caused the accident, is thrown into a chaotic series of meetings as she tries to put together the large sum of money. Debut director Ioseb "Soso" Bliadze analyzes the situation’s impact on each affected individual without pointing fingers or moralizing. His careful contextualization of the characters’ motives combines with a subjective approach to produce a complex story that does not shy away from a tragicomic tone. One person’s misery may be another’s good fortune.
