At Full Throttle

Crystal Globe Competition 2021 / Láska pod kapotou / Czech Republic, Slovak Republic 2021

Fifty-something former miner Jaroslav has always dreamt of a career as a race car driver. In a congenial and jovial manner, he represents not only the charms and struggles (especially economic) of southeastern Moravia, but also the ever more visible chasm between city and countryside. An uncommonly charismatic portrait of a man struggling with the traumas of the past who, with disarming directness, clings to the promise of good luck and a dignified life alongside a new partner.

At Full Throttle At Full Throttle

Synopsis

It would be far too simplistic to call director Miro Remo a documentary filmmaker. The way in which this distinctly talented Slovak director presents his protagonists is unique in its complexity both at home and abroad. Remo’s Jaroslav, a former miner who has always dreamt of a career as a race car driver, represents, in a congenial and jovial manner, not only the charms and struggles (especially economic) of southeastern Moravia, but also the ever more visible socio-political chasm between city and countryside. At Full Throttle is an uncommonly charismatic portrait of a man struggling with the traumas of the past who, with disarming directness, clings to the promise of good luck and a dignified life alongside a new partner.
