Lamb

Horizons 2021 / Dýrið / Iceland, Sweden, Poland 2021

A childless couple live on a farm with a flock of sheep as their only company. María and Ingvar’s peaceful life changes the moment a mysterious newborn appears in their barn. A folk tale and an unsettling, horror-like visual poem all in one, Lamb was shown in competition in the Un Certain Regard section, where it won the Prize of Originality.

Lamb Lamb

Synopsis

A childless couple live on a farm, with a flock of sheep their only company. María (Noomi Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snær Guðnason) live a modest and peaceful life in harmony with nature. Yet they defy the natural order of things when a mysterious newborn appears in their barn and they decide to keep it, despite the warning signals. Debut director Valdimar Jóhannsson draws on folk traditions to bring an unsettling and highly original story in which human drama comes up against the supernatural. A visual poem and a meditation on motherhood, unconditional love, and respect for the laws of nature, Lamb was shown in competition in the Un Certain Regard section, where it won the Prize of Originality – the first time the jury presented this award.
