The Word

Crystal Globe Competition 2022 / Slovo / Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Poland 2022

Beata Parkanová, the filmmaker behind Moments, returns to Karlovy Vary with an exceptionally vivid portrait of the family of notary Václav Vojíř, a small-town moral authority, and his selfless wife Věra. This masterfully told and highly original intimate drama, whose protagonists undergo a difficult ordeal in the summer of 1968, is reinforced by finely wrought, exquisite performances from Martin Finger and Gabriela Mikulková.

The Word The Word

Synopsis

Beata Parkanová, the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed film Moments (East of the West Competition 2018), returns to Karlovy Vary with an exceptionally vivid portrait of the family of Václav Vojíř, a respected notary and small-town authority, and his self-sacrificing spouse Věra. While husband and wife are quite dissimilar from one another, in their disposition they share not only a serene, pure form of love alongside tenderness and affability, but also mutual respect and admirable ethical principles. This masterfully told and highly original intimate drama about the power of the given word, whose protagonists – inspired by the director’s forebears – undergo a difficult ordeal in the summer of 1968, is reinforced by finely wrought, exquisite performances from Martin Finger and Gabriela Mikulková.
