To the North To the North

Synopsis

Dumitru dreams of traveling far beyond the horizon, to the America of his dreams, so he and a friend stow away on a trans-oceanic freighter. Dumitru is quickly discovered by the Filipino sailor Joel, who is thus faced with a difficult decision. The uncompromising Taiwanese officers do not tolerate stowaways, but Joel’s steadfast religious beliefs tell him to help those in need… With this ambitious debut inspired by true events from 1996, Romanian director Mihai Mincan has produced a hypnotic thriller about the strength of faith, morality, and fearing for one’s life. The film premiered in the Orizzonti section at last year’s Venice Film Festival.
