And the King Said, What a Fantastic Machine

Horizons 2023 / And the King Said, What a Fantastic Machine / Sweden, Denmark 2023

And the King Said, What a Fantastic Machine And the King Said, What a Fantastic Machine

Synopsis

From the camera obscura to television and film, all the way to the culture of the selfie and non-stop live streaming, this dynamic cinematic essay takes us on a roller-coaster ride through chilling, frenzied, and variously fabricated images of reality. They can hypnotize, mobilize, and sometimes even suppress our instinct for self-preservation. Why do we succumb to them en masse, and how can we learn to deal with them better? According to the latest documentary by these two award-winning European filmmakers, in the era of the mass spread of mobile phone cameras, our relationship to photography and video has not necessarily reached its decadent end – perhaps it is just going through puberty.
