Monster

Horizons 2023 / Kaibutsu / Japan 2023

Monster Monster

Synopsis

Saori is raising her son Minato on her own. When Minato begins to behave strangely, she is determined to discover the cause of this change. The accusations land on his teacher, Hori, and an angry Saori rushes to the school to seek justice. But reality is not as simple as it at first seems… Yuji Sakamoto’s Cannes-winning screenplay masterfully assembles the individual pieces of the story, telling them from the perspective of the various actors and causing viewers to doubt themselves just when they think that they’ve figured it all out. Director Hirokazu Koreeda again shows a rare sense for guiding child actors and applies his typical humanist approach to convey a moving story about family, people’s yearning to be understood, and the burden of secrets.
