Fallen Leaves

Horizons 2023 / Kuolleet lehdet / Finland, Germany 2023

Fallen Leaves Fallen Leaves

Synopsis

Holappa works as a construction laborer, lives in a workers' hostel, and drowns his sorrows in the excessive consumption of alcohol. Ansa has a poorly paid job at a supermarket and returns home in the evenings to an empty apartment, where the radio is tuned in to news of Russia’s bloody invasion of Ukraine. One night, the trajectories of their lives intersect at a dingy karaoke bar… This year Aki Kaurismäki, a living legend known for his distinctive directorial style and extremely dry sense of humor, returned to Cannes in best form for the first time in twelve years. His melancholic romantic comedy, set to the rhythm of “Mambo Italiano,” melted the hardened hearts of even the greatest cynics and took home the Jury Prize from a panel headed by last year’s winner Ruben Östlund.
