Sion Sono, the Japanese director who made a break through with his film Noriko no shokutaku (Noriko’s Dinner Table), which participated in the KVIFF Competition ten years ago, likes animals. In particular Babe: The Gallant Pig, whose 1995 adventures he has selected for the new section - Six Close Encounters. “I was surprised that other directors chose high-brow films”, said Sion Sono, who had already presented Babe as his favourite film at other film events. “I just wondered whether to select the first film or the sequel for the KVIFF”.
The Japanese director also mentioned George Miller, the director of all the Mad Max films, who took part in creation of the Oscar-winning comedy-drama, which instigates kindness in the viewers. “There is a vitality in Babe similar to the Max’s. But, in the first place, this is a charming film which is very close to my heart” admitted Sono. The viewers, having been enchanted by the happy life at the farm, where a gentle little pig defied its destiny and won a sheep-dog competition, could subsequently enjoy Tokio Tribe, his violent and burlesque anime-style hip-hop opera.
