Thanks to KVIFF Distribution, today (Monday, 11 July) three new films from the 51st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival come to cinemas throughout the Czech Republic as part of Vary at Your Cinema. After the conclusion of this mini-festival at the end of the month, the films will appear independently in theatre programmes. In this way, KVIFF Distribution meets its main goal of getting outstanding festival films into regular cinematic distribution.
The undisputed flagship film of Vary at Your Cinema is Captain Fantastic (USA 2016), about a freethinking family living alone in the woods. Viggo Mortensen excels in the role of an eccentric father of six. The film was shown in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, from which director Matt Ross took home a best director award.
Director Bruno Dumont’s Slack Bay (Ma Loute, France 2016) is a wild comedy and retro detective story all in one. The film, which features famous actors (Juliette Binoche, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) in fresh roles, is set in the beautifully shot scenery of northern France and shows the even the French know how to poke fun at themselves.
The wild and sensual world of the Brazilian rodeo is the subject of the Neon Bull (Boi Neon, Brazil 2015), the second feature film by young Brazilian director Gabriel Mascaro. This exotic road movie tells the story of a provisional family whose home is the lorry that takes them and their bulls from one stop to the next. The lives of the people and animals in rural Brazil are infused with an animalistic mixture of passion and hope. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival.
