Alexandru Solomon’s intriguingly titled Tarzan’s Testicles is among the contenders in the Karlovy Vary IFF’s documentary competition this year. It traces the fascinating history of a primate research centre in Sukhumi, the capital of today’s Abkhazia, where scientists set out to crossbreed humans and primates. In an interview, the Romanian director discusses the reasons the centre was established in the 1920s, and how its decayed state today reflects the fate of the troubled country.
First-hand brews throughout the year.
