KVIFF Distribution brings Sorrentino’s latest, Loro, to Czech cinemas

September 06, 2018, 10:30

Three years after his successful Youth – which won the audience award at the 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival – KVIFF Distribution brings another film by today’s leading Italian director, Paolo Sorrentino. The grandiose and provocative comic drama Loro (Them) continues in the tradition of Sorrentino’s inimitable style, which audiences will remember from his Oscar-winning The Great Beauty. This time around, Sorrentino’s long-time acting collaborator Toni Servillo appears as Silvio Berlusconi – the infamous billionaire, scandal-monger, media mogul and long-serving Italian prime minister known in particular for his eccentric lifestyle and wild parties that gained renown around the world through under the name “bunga bunga”. Although the story focuses on this central figure, it touches on many other universal themes: the loss of values in politics, egoism, chauvinism and the cynical mechanisms of power. It looks not only at the real Silvio Berlusconi and other powerful men of his kind, but also explores what kind of people help to keep them in power – the “them” of the title: those who like to be close to powerful men, those who curry their favour, those who vote for them. In short, all those who have learned to love them.

Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Loro comes to Czech cinemas on 15 November thanks to a collaborative effort by the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Czech Television and Aerofilms.
