Changes in the programme structure of the Karlovy Vary IFF

January 20, 2020, 13:11

KVIFF is adjusting the structure of its competitions and non-competitive sections. The Programme Department has decided to end the existence of a separate competition section for documentary film. Starting with the festival’s 55th edition, feature-length documentaries will be accepted into the two existing competitions previously reserved only for fiction films only: the non-specialized international competition, in which films from around the world vie for the Grand Prix - Crystal Globe, and the East of the West Competition for debut and sophomore features by directors from Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Greece, the Middle East, North Africa and the countries of the former Soviet Union.

Also being simplified in order to give audiences a better overview is the festival’s non-competitive program. Starting with the next festival, there will no longer be the section Official Selection – Out of Competition, which in the past focused on premiere screenings of new films. Exclusive premieres and pre-premieres of Czech and foreign films will continue to be presented in the Special Screenings section. Changed are also the programmes for the most interesting films from the current festival season by incorporating the Another View section into Horizons. The number of films shown in Horizons will reflect the total number of films originally shown in both these sections.
