News Once again at cinemas throughout the Czech Republic – KVIFF AT YOUR CINEMA 21

The festival opens with a special pre-premiere of Helena Třeštíková’s latest

The second annual KVIFF AT YOUR CINEMA, brought to you by the organizers of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, runs from 30 November to 2 December 2021. At 38 cinemas from Brandýs nad Labem to Zábřeh, this mini-festival presents six films chosen by the KVIFF programming department. Just like last year, each film will be shown at all participating cinemas just once, on the same day and at the same time.

“Enriched by our many amazing encounters with Czech cinema operators, we are happy to follow up on last year’s successful pilot project of KVIFF at Your Cinema with six exciting cinematic gatherings through which we try to bring the inimitable atmosphere of the Karlovy Vary festival to cinemas throughout the country,” says KVIFF’s artistic director Karel Och.

The festival opens at 5pm on Tuesday 30 November with a pre-premiere of Helena Třeštíková’s latest film, René – The Prisoner of Freedom, a sequel to her rawly original portrait René from 2008. After the screening, Prague’s Světozor Cinema will host a forum with the director and the film’s protagonist that will be live-streamed to all participating cinemas. Audiences at all cinemas can submit questions using the Slido app.

The Karlovy Vary festival’s traditional “Horizons” section will be represented by three films that all premiered in competition at this year’s festival in Cannes, where Finnish director Juho Kuosmanen’s Compartment No. 6 took home the Grand Jury Prize. Kuosmanen is a long-time friend of the Karlovy Vary festival. Compartment No. 6 will be shown at 5pm on 1 December, followed by an online discussion with the director.

Another film shown at Cannes is Paul Verhoeven’s widely anticipated erotic historical drama Benedetta, which will be shown in Czech distribution shortly after KVIFF at Your Cinema.

The third Cannes film is the closing film of KVIFF at Your Cinema, The Worst Person in the World by director Joachim Trier. It is showing at 8pm on 2 December. This film, too, will be followed by an online discussion with the director.

All three discussions will be moderated by Karel Och and streamed live to participating cinemas. They can also be viewed online at KVIFF.TV.

Another film being screened as part of KVIFF at Your Cinema is Britain’s The Boiling Point, which earned the special jury prize for actress Vinette Robinson at KVIFF and also did well in audience voting. KVIFF at Your Cinema will probably be the last chance to see The Boiling Point on the big screen in the Czech Republic.

In honor of legendary actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, who passed away this year, KVIFF at Your Cinema is showing the cult movie The Man from Acapulco, with original Czech dubbing.

KVIFF AT YOUR CINEMA 21 runs from 30 November to 2 December at 38 cinemas throughout the Czech Republic. The festival is observing all epidemic regulations that currently apply to cultural events. Screenings take place at 5pm and 8pm. Tickets are available only at the ticket offices of the participating cinemas.
