Special Screenings presents artists’ portraits and the best documentary from the Berlinale

June 02, 2026, 10:28

This year’s Special Screenings section shows thirteen new films, primarily from domestic cinema. Heading the pack is Pepa Lubojacki’s moving collage about living with a brother whose addiction has landed him on the streets, If Pigeons Turned to Gold, winner of the Best Documentary Award at the Berlinale. It is joined by eleven world premieres, including Bára - Diary of a Rockstar, Helena Třeštíková’s latest long-term documentary; A Pint of Ink, a portrait of the Japanologist Petr Geisler by his daughter Ester Geislerová; and a documentary about a famous cinematographer, Jana Hojdová’s Robert Richardson: The White Devil.

The festival’s longtime friend Mark Cousins will also be on hand to show a part of his most recent saga, The Story of Documentary Film, specifically the episode focused on the 1980s. Other world premieres will take you among Ukrainian soldiers or into the forests of Estonia, and the international premiere of The Friend’s House is Here takes us onto the streets of Tehran.

More information about the films in the Special Screenings section is available here.
