On Sunday, the festival will remember a young filmmaker who died in June

July 04, 2015, 20:00

Among the many talents who graduated from FAMU this year, one promising artist is sadly no longer with us. The exceptional, enigmatic director known as La Aramisova passed away on June 19th at the age of 41. Michal Kráčmer, the producer of his last, unfinished film Kids from the East has organized a retrospective of his work in cooperation with the Program Department.

You can watch Aramisova’s four films on Sunday at 13:30 in Cinema C on the first floor of the Thermal Hotel. Entrance is free, with no accreditation needed. “It’s awful that such a young man and such a promising filmmaker left us so unexpectedly.” We decided to pay tribute to him by screening his films, which have an unusual directorial style,” said Anna Purkrábková from the Program Department, also noting that Aramisova’s last film was supported by the KVIFF Foundation.

Many spoke of the filmmaker, who studied directing at FAMU with Věra Chytilová and Jasmina Blažević, as the reincarnation of the former. Blažević recalls: “He was a genuine personality, you couldn’t help but notice him. His power, though, didn’t come from dominance, but rather from modesty and empathy. As I see it, the best quality of his films is a perfect feel for interpersonal relations. He simply knew how to figure out the authentic reaction of one character towards another and relate it truthfully. No rules of dramaturgy can teach you that.”

Today in Cinema C you can see Wolves and Foxes, his first-year film I Like Nora, his second-year film Cagey Tigers and his thesis film What We Did Before We Drank Cocoa Together. “When I tried to arrange a deal for him to improve his finances, he wouldn’t take it. He only did what he considered essential. And he was very humble,” added Blažević.

If you would like to support Aramisova’s wife and his young daughter Lajka in their difficult situation, FAMU has set up an account for donations: 270858285 / 0300. This press release comes from material in the Festival Daily.
