The most discussed topic in today’s world is probably the fate of illegal immigrants, refugees, who want to fulfill their “Western European dream”. This is the main theme of Babai, the feature-length debut of Kosovar director Visar Morina, which has its international premiere today in Karlovy Vary. In the film, the forty-something Gezim takes care of his young son Nori alone. He loves his son, but also sees him as a burden preventing him from carrying out his vague and ill-conceived vision of a satisfying and secure life outside his native Kosovo.
“Nori suffers great losses in the film, but faces them with outstanding courage. Since he has no mother, he doesn’t want to lose his father as well,” says director Visar Morina. In his debut film, Morina strives above all to bear witness—which, in a context full of agitated debates about refugees that tend to take place without the perspective of the refugees themselves, is no small task.
