When She Jumped

Official Selection - Competition 2007 / Cuando ella saltó / Argentina 2007

Young Ramiro would probably have continued aimlessly contemplating his future if he hadn’t witnessed the suicide of a young girl. Her words, recorded onto a CD, help Ramiro find himself, and he begins to see Buenos Aires as a city full of fascinating and friendly people.

When She Jumped When She Jumped

Synopsis

Ramiro was brought up by his mother. He is 26 and, right now, he is just hanging around doing nothing, and his thoughts of the future are a bit naïve and childish. Ramiro just happens to be on the spot when Angela commits suicide by jumping off a roof. He finds her little rucksack up there containing photographs, a diary and a CD with her voice on it: “Learn to observe. What’s happening inside, and what’s happening on the surface… Learn to understand the difference between seeing and looking”… just the kind of advice Ramiro needs. He wants to take the girl’s things to her family and meets Lila, Angela’s twin, who poses as her sister so that, as Angela, she can earn money working in a bar and also so she can somehow feel her sister’s presence around her. This is the romantic comedy by Sabrina Farji, a story of the many forms of love and of the endeavour to appreciate one’s existence through greater sensitivity. The film is full of strong colours, tastes and fragrances, it’s wonderful to listen to (the score was written by Julian Urman), and it subtly blends pop culture with gipsy folklore. Buenos Aires itself plays a major role in the film, both its bright and darker sides.
