Boogie

East of the West - Competition 2008 / Boogie / Romania 2008

A chance encounter between ambitious thirty-something Bogdan and two classmates from secondary school while on holiday by the Black Sea reflects differing attitudes towards life within a generation entering middle age. The unostentatious method of direction gives the impression that we are involved in the party, which winds up towards the morning with a poignant sense that nothing is the same anymore.

Boogie Boogie

Synopsis

Thirty-something Bogdan has started a furniture company, gotten married and had a child. Now he is spending a holiday with his family by the Black Sea and his wife is expecting another baby. At the resort he meets two classmates from secondary school who have yet to settle down and take up their responsibilities. Boogie (as the protagonist was called in his school days) gets into an intellectual and emotional confrontation with Sorin and Vali after an evening spent in a restaurant, bowling hall, bar and at the guest house with a prostitute. Trying to get back to their teenage years leaves a bitter taste in their mouths as all three have changed, Bogdan in particular on account of his obligations... The film glimpses into the souls of its protagonists via an unostentatious method of direction. The static shots, authentic sound and outstanding acting performances give us the sense of being a party to the disenchantment of a generation entering middle age.
