Times and Winds

Tribute to Reha Erdem 2012 / Beş vakit / Turkey 2006

Building a cinematic structure based on the village azan (call to prayer), the director follows cultural and natural cycles via the lives of three friends in early adolescence. The gracefully framed pastoral beauty of this minimalist film is accompanied by the celestial music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.

Synopsis

This time around, the setting of Reha Erdem’s picture leaves Istanbul for the countryside. Taking on editing duties himself and structuring the story around the azan (call to prayer), the director follows cultural and natural cycles via the lives of three friends in early adolescence. Although it’s time to start taking on their respective roles, they have yet to come to terms with the family system. Fathers are scornful of their sons, mothers are insensitive towards their daughters, and what is passed from one generation to another boils down to a cruel tradition of obedience. Only when the children finally escape and surrender themselves completely to nature does peace embrace them. The gracefully framed pastoral beauty of this minimalist film is accompanied by the celestial music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.
