Synopsis

This comprehensive portrait of one the French film industry’s key figures of the second half of the 20th century reconstructs Melville’s experiences from the front and the resistance during the Second World War, and analyzes how they influenced his filmmaking career. Rare archive footage and film clips round out interviews with, among others, directors influenced by Melville’s work. Bertrand Tavernier, Johnnie To, Masahiro Kobayashi, and Volker Schlöndorff recall the creator of Le samouraï and Army of Shadows, as do his nephew Rémy Grumbach and critic, filmmaker, and actor André S. Labarthe. Portuguese columnist and critic Rui Nogueira, author of the book of interviews Melville on Melville (Le cinéma selon Melville), will be on hand at the Karlovy Vary festival to personally introduce the nine films of the Melville tribute.
