Vendetta

Czech Films 2011–2012 2012 / Vendeta / Czech Republic 2011

When a quite ordinary man loses his daughter he decides to act – impulsively and in a manner totally unexpected of him. Does anyone have the right to take justice into his own hands? And is there any chance he will succeed? This drama with elements of thriller is a rare Czech attempt at a pure genre film.

Vendetta Vendetta

Synopsis

Does evil really just spawn more evil? A desperate man is driven by his desire to avenge his 14-year-old daughter. He’s clear in his mind as to who committed the crime, but will he find the strength to carry out his revenge? And can an essentially good person attain peace of mind if he violates his own conscience? What further hope has he got? The film, which pits the hero against a strong opponent with his own oppressive traumas, toys with issues of justice and guilt, however, this is not a psychological drama. Instead, Martin Štrba’s powerful lensing captures the rawness of the various generic castling moves it sets up within a strictly defined temporal- spatial environment. The atmosphere is further intensified by an evocative soundtrack that fills the void when the victims find themselves totally alone and vulnerable. But who is the victim here? Vendetta attempts to establish moral dilemmas yet also tries to draw the viewer into its unique circumstances. The picture acquires another intriguing dimension with the casting of Ondřej Vetchý, who usually plays characters with almost unreservedly positive qualities.
