A Trip

Variety's Ten Euro Directors to Watch 2012 / Izlet / Slovenia 2011

Three best pals from high school remember the past and confront their fears about the future. A Trip is an emotionally honest tale that captures the alienation and uncertainty of a generation lacking purpose and ideals, and boasts spectacularly scenic locations, a tight script and impressive lensing.

A Trip A Trip

Synopsis

Three best pals from high school remember the past and confront fears about the future in modest but compelling Slovenian youth drama A Trip. Shot on some spectacularly scenic locations, this tightly scripted, impressively lensed tale marks helmer-writer Nejc Gazvoda as a talent to watch. Temperamental looker Ziva (Nina Rakovec), buff soldier Gregor (Jure Henigman) and tart-tongued gay guy Andrej (Luka Cimpric) take off for the seaside as was their wont in more carefree years. But now, as young adults, life isn’t so simple. As they drive, drink and converse, we learn Andrej has dropped out of university, Gregor is afraid of being killed in Afghanistan, and Ziva has a secret of her own. When Gregor and Ziva finally act on their long-simmering attraction, it triggers a bout of truth-telling that threatens the trio’s long-time bonds.

About the director

Nejc Gazvoda

Nejc Gazvoda (1985, Novo mesto, Slovenia) graduated in film and television direction from the Academy of Theater, Film, Radio, and Television in Ljubljana. He entitled his graduation film An Ounce of Luck (2008) and took the Academy’s highest honor with the film. He took another award for writing the short film It Is Easy (2009), and he also cowrote the movie Personal Baggage with Janez Lapajne, one of Slovenia’s most prominent directors. "I wanted to make my first film as soon as possible, and put all my power into it,” states Gazvoda. "I wanted to make a movie about my generation [...] but I wanted to tell a story about stuff that matters – about friendship, love, the end of childhood and about things that really bother me in Slovenia.” A Trip garnered numerous domestic awards. The director’s second future will be titled Dual. In addition to screenwriting, he has made a name for himself as a prose writer and playwright as well.
