Synopsis

A French chanteuse, Stefan, a young driver, an American diplomat, dominatrix Melita, a German businessman, hotel maid Jagoda, Croatian policeman Mate, and policewoman Đurđa. Each in their own way, all these characters try to find their ideal match in contemporary Belgrade: after years of isolation, the city is again opening its doors to the world. The film’s protagonists are not finding the relationship lark at all easy, however; they come apart at the seams, they keep falling in love, but they also discover their roots... Practical Guide to Belgrade with Singing and Crying is a collection of mini-romantic comedies. Set against the backdrop of a pro-European modern Serbia, it uses intelligent humour, insight and lightly subversive irony to describe love in contemporary Belgrade in four different ways. The filmmakers themselves note with a grin: "Although there are all sorts of conditions we still have to meet in order to enter the EU, by making love to guests from abroad, Belgrade citizens are at least one step closer to Europe.”
