Noseland

Forum of Independents - Competition 2012 / Noseland / Austria 2011

Set at a classical music festival in summertime Dubrovnik, this mischievous mockumentary attacks stereotyped notions of violinists, cellists, and other virtuosos, conductors not excepted. Julian Rachlin, Aleksey Igudesman, Mischa Maisky, John Malkovich, Sir Roger Moore, and many others perform, play, and recite with withering (self)-irony.

Noseland Noseland

Synopsis

"Have you ever thought of dying as a career move?” Since 2001 violin virtuoso Julian Rachlin has organized a festival of classical music in Dubrovnik where, in addition to renowned musicians such as cellist Mischa Maisky, John Malkovich and regular guest Roger Moore have also appeared. Although the festival does unquestionably exist, and famous personalities do turn up in this portrait, the statements they make may sound rather doubtful. Despite its stylization as a documentary, the movie quite clearly distances itself from any kind of stilted seriousness as it asks subversive and politically incorrect questions. And if the artists aren’t afraid to make fools of themselves, it’s a good sign they’ll happily lay into others as well. Like the work of Sacha Baron Cohen, the movie is not afraid to be rude, to amp up the humor when we’re expecting a little let-up, nor does it hesitate to push the boundaries of the ridiculous. The work draws strength from its creative inversion of the documentary format as it cleverly takes aim at things we are completely familiar with.

About the director

Aleksey Igudesman

Aleksey Igudesman (Petersburg) gained a name primarily as a violinist and conductor, but also as an occasional actor and filmmaker. At age twelve he was accepted to the Yehudi Menuhin School and later he studied at the Vienna Conservatory. He has recorded with the foremost classical music ensembles, and has also worked with actor Roger Moore and with film music composer Hans Zimmer on the soundtrack for Sherlock Holmes, among others. He and pianist Hyung-ki Joo, performing as "A Little Nightmare Music,” bring together classical music and comedy performance, and their act went viral on the internet. Igudesman not only directed and produced Noseland, but he acts in it as well.
