Presented in the Un Certain Regard section at this year’s Cannes IFF, the movie came about through a desire to get to know the city at a specific moment in time. Havana will undoubtedly be dramatically changing in the near future. Seven directors chose their own particular method for shooting a short cinematic contribution about a place whose magic and enchanting aura contrast with its geographic location.
Seven respected directors were each asked to shoot a short film set in the Cuban capital, Havana. The resulting omnibus captures, in contrasting styles and perspectives, the fascinating atmosphere of the city over a period of seven days. Benicio Del Toro follows an American tourist on his first visit to Cuba. Pablo Trapero gives us a story about a famous film director who strikes up a friendship with his Cuban driver. In Julio Medem’s love triangle, a singer must decide between her partner and a passionate Spaniard. Elia Suleiman’s film is about a Palestinian man waiting all day for a meeting with an ambassador, while Gaspar Noé depicts the ritual casting out of the devil from the body of a lesbian girl. Juan Carlos Tabío focuses on a mother trying to support her family; and Laurent Cantet gives us a portrait of an old woman whose actions are guided by visions of the Virgin Mary.

Benicio Del Toro is an actor and director. For his role in Traffic (2000) he received an Academy Award. So far his directorial credits include two short films. Pablo Trapero is an Argentine director who has been awarded at Rotterdam and Venice. Lion’s Den (2008) was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Fellow Argentine Gaspar Noé has gained a name for esthetically radical movies, including Enter the Void (2009). Spaniard Julio Medem has been awarded multiple times for his films about love. Land (1996) screened in Cannes’ main competition. Palestinian director Elia Suleiman is known primarily for Divine Intervention (2002), which won the 2002 Jury Prize at Cannes. Cuban director Juan Carlos Tabío took a Silver Bear at Berlin for Strawberry and Chocolate (1994). Frenchman Laurent Cantet took home the Palme d’Or from Cannes for The Class (2008).
