Synopsis

Eighteen-year-old Shira grew up in an Orthodox Hasidic family in Tel Aviv. Her future is clear: she is to marry a promising young man of the same age. After the death of Shira’s older sister Esther, who dies while giving birth to her first child, the family decides that Shira should marry Esther’s widower Yochay. He feels that it’s too early for another marriage, though attractive Shira is the logical choice for a multitude of reasons. But the girl must decide between her mother’s wishes and the voice of her heart.… In this powerful yet subtle directorial debut, Rama Burshtein offers a parallel to the stories of Jane Austen: strong female characters who try to find their own way in a world of delimiting social conventions. And as in the novels of the English writer, her movie makes room for gentle humor and loving understanding between the main characters.
