Tango Libre

Horizons 2013 / Tango libre / Belgium, France, Luxembourg 2012

The story of prison guard JC, a man without a past or a future, is a visually accomplished, fairytale-like story about the various forms of a love that will not be bound by social convention. The latest movie from the talented Belgian director screened in the Orizzonti section at the Venice IFF where it won the Special Jury Prize.

Tango Libre Tango Libre

Synopsis

JC is a prison guard, a man without a past or a future. His only passion is the tango, which he dances once a week in a dark and rundown hall. One evening the attractive and mysterious Alice, the mother of a 15-year-old boy, shows up for dance class. The next morning JC notices her in the prison visiting room with inmates Fernand and Dominic, old cohorts and friends: one of them is her husband and the other her lover. This penitentiary ménage à trois, a visually accomplished film, is the fourth feature from talented Belgian director Frédéric Fonteyne, who cowrote the script with Anne Paulicevich (who plays Alice). Despite its somber overtones, the fairytale-like narrative also employs touches of humor and hyperbole to portray the various forms of a love that will not be bound by social convention. The emotionally-charged dance scenes that play out in prison are sure to make a lasting impression on the viewer…

About the director

Frédéric Fonteyne

Frédéric Fonteyne (b. 1968, Brussels) studied TV and film direction at IAD in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium (1985-89), and at the beginning of the 1990s he shot several short films. His segment "La modestie” from The Seven Deadly Sins (1991) screened in the Settimana della Critica at the Venice IFF. In 1993 Fonteyne accepted an award from the Fondation Belge de la Vocation and two years later IAD invited him to lecture in direction. His first feature, Max et Bobo (1997), was followed by a teaching gig at Parallax Acting School. Two years later he came out with the successful A Pornographic Affair, which was presented at the Karlovy Vary festival, as was Gilles’ Wife (2004). The director himself came to Karlovy Vary as a Grand Jury member in 2005.
