A Hijacking

Another View 2013 / Kapringen / Denmark 2012

Based on actual events, A Hijacking follows a Danish cargo ship on its way to India as it is hijacked by Somali pirates. The film takes an unusually realistic look at the negotiations between the shipping company and the kidnappers, and follows the desperate waiting game endured by the crew. The film was shown at the Venice and Toronto film festivals.

A Hijacking A Hijacking

Synopsis

Based on real events from 2007 and 2008, when two Danish cargo ships were hijacked by Somali pirates, A Hijacking explores the fate of several sailors traveling across the Indian Ocean to Bombay. During the voyage, however, they are intercepted and held captive by Somali pirates who demand several million dollars for their release. The film looks at this dramatic situation from two different points of view. First, there is the increasing sense of despair felt by the captive crew, who after many long weeks are beginning to lose faith in a favourable outcome to their predicament. The second storyline unfolds thousands of kilometers away, at the round table of the Danish company that suddenly finds itself responsible for the lives of its employees. The work of a directorial and stylistic perfectionist, this film successfully avoids cheap dramatization, and instead offers an unusually realistic look at a situation familiar to most of us only via our TV screens. The tangible reality of this extraordinarily moving and emotionally compelling story will send a chill down your spine.

About the director

Tobias Lindholm

Tobias Lindholm (b. 1977) is one of the most interesting names in contemporary Danish film. After graduating with a degree in screenwriting from the National Film School of Denmark (2007), he worked in television, where he garnered attention as one of the creators of the series "Borgen" (2010–present), which was awarded Britain’s prestigious BAFTA award. As a screenwriter, he has collaborated closely with leading Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, co-writing the scripts for Submarino (2010), which was screened at the Berlinale, and The Hunt (Jagten, 2012), shown in the main competition at Cannes. Both films were also shown at KVIFF. Czech festival audiences have also had the chance to see Lindholm’s feature film debut R (2010), which has been hailed as the best prison film of recent years. His second film, A Hijacking (2012), also explores the harsh reality of modern life.
