To the Woods

Czech Films 2012–2013 2013 / Cesta do lesa / Czech Republic 2012

The heroes of the hit film Out of the City (2000) have discovered that life in the country beats living in the city. We now see them surrounded by nature, but also by untrusting villagers who won’t tolerate townies in their midst – and certainly not if they bring weird alternative healing methods with them. Will they all be able to come to an understanding?

To the Woods To the Woods

Synopsis

Former IT guy Honza, his wife Markéta, who earns a living as an alternative healer, and their two children have long since realised that an urban existence can’t beat country living and being close to nature. Daughter Anyna loves wandering in the woods, where she comes across the local forest ranger’s assistant, Ludva. At first glance, the world of the stubborn vegetarian seems to be poles apart from the profession chosen by this dedicated young lad, whose job description includes shooting game. Initially, their parents also appear to have little in common, particularly when good will is perceived with the kind of suspicion that dents human relationships. Tomáš Vorel, who describes his film as "a tribute to the Czech woodsmen and farmers who bravely confront the natural elements and the threat of urban encroachment,” turns his attention towards contemporary failings this time as well. Yet here the director has abandoned the fitful exasperation of his last few films, focusing more on the quest for peace and equilibrium. These emanate from the heart of nature which, in the end, conquers even the most instinctive of human grievances.

About the director

Tomáš Vorel

Tomáš Vorel (b. 1957, Prague), director, screenwriter and occasional actor (long-term association with Sklep theatre). Following a series of amateur films and direction studies at FAMU, he debuted with the story showcase The Prague Five (1988). His second film, the unconventional period musical Smoke (1990), is today considered one of the most remarkable Czech films in recent decades. He established the production company Vorel Film in 1995, whose first offering was the acerbic comedy Stone Bridge (1996). The feature film Out of the City (2000) gave rise not only to the film To the Woods but also to the documentary Out of the City II (2002), which follows the life quests of five individuals. Like Vorel’s other films, the farcical Skritek (2005) is also portrayed via distinctive artistic stylisation. Vorel’s comedy The Can (2007) was a huge hit with audiences; he has just completed its loose sequel Campus.
