A motion picture from one of the most original Québecois directors, charting Victoria and Florence’s efforts to start a new life after being released from prison. But even deep in the Québec woods, unresolved events from the past catch up with them. Nonconformist characters, artful direction, a mysterious atmosphere, and dry humor made for one of the most interesting entries at this year’s Berlinale.
Sixty-year-old Victoria has just been released from prison and she’s decided to start a new life in a small shack deep in the Québec woods. Flo, her former cellmate, follows soon after. Their solitude and renewed intimacy is disrupted by a young cop named Guillaume, Victoria’s parole officer. The women soon find out, however, that in the end he will not be the one who poses the greatest threat to their regained freedom. Unexplained and unresolved events from the past have more dire and devastating consequences than at first it seemed. Denis Côté once again populated his picture with distinctive, nonconformist characters. The heroines live on the edge of society because they have very little faith in people and, moreover, are reluctant to live according to social norms. This deliberate, concise work with its own particular dry humor and inventive directorial style, is imbued with an atmosphere of mystery. Created by one of the most original Québécois directors, the picture competed this year at the Berlinale.

Denis Côté (b. 1973, New Brunswick, Canada) is one of the most original Québécois filmmakers, seeking to break down and eliminate the borders between experiement, cinéma vérité, documentary, and drama. He came to moviemaking through his work as a film critic and creator of a myriad experimental shorts. His artistic career began with the feature-length picture Drifting States (Les états nordiques, 2005), awarded the Golden Leopard in the video competition at the Locarno IFF. Then followed Our Private Lives (Nos vies privées, 2007), All That She Wants (Elle veut le chaos, 2008), the documentary Carcasses (2009), Curling (2010), and another documentary, Bestiaire (2012). Côté’s movies are always well-received at international film festivals.
