Fruitvale Station

Horizons 2013 / Fruitvale Station / USA 2013

New Year’s Eve 2008. The true and shocking story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old American whose encounter with police at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland, California, ended in tragedy. This engaging picture won both the Grand Jury Prize (dramatic feature) and the Audience Award (US drama) at this year’s Sundance festival, and subsequently screened at Cannes.

Fruitvale Station Fruitvale Station

Synopsis

Ryan Coogler, one of this year’s most interesting debut filmmakers, had this to say about the protagonist of his debut feature: "I want audiences to know that he was a real person. He was a person with real struggles and personal conflicts, but also with real hopes, and real dreams, and goals. And his life mattered deeply to the people that he loved the most.” This captivating drama presents the true and shocking story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old American who wakes up on December 31, 2008, with a strange and difficult-to-define feeling. Seeing it as a sign to make a fresh start, Oscar sets out to realize his New Year’s resolutions concerning those closest to him – his sentimental mother, his girlfriend Sophina and his four-year-old daughter Tatiana. Two hours into the New Year, however, his premonition takes on a whole different shape when the young man is shot by a police officer at Fruitvale rapid transit stop. The film, which is certainly a contender for next year’s Oscars, was produced by Forest Whitaker’s Significant Productions.
